Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Total Hip Replacement Surgery using the Anterior Approach by Dr. Matta is a rapidly growing Hip Replacement Surgery procedure because it offers definite advantages for patients. Mainly, because Rehabilitation is simplified and accelerated compared with other more traditional total Hip Replacement Surgery approaches.

After Total Hip Replacement Surgery has been performed using the Anterior approach, Rehabilitation is accelerated and hospital time decreased because the hip is replaced without detaching the muscle from the pelvis or femur. Other hip replacement surgical approaches involve detachment of muscle from the femur during Total Hip Replacement Surgery. In the anterior approach though, the hip is approached and replaced through a natural interval between muscles. The most important muscles for hip function, the gluteal muscles that attach to the posterior and lateral pelvis and femur, are left intact.

After Total Hip Replacement Surgery has been performed using the Anterior approach, lack of disturbance of the lateral and posterior soft tissues also accounts for immediate stability of the hip and a low risk of dislocation. It is normal for patients undergoing lateral or posterior incisions to follow strict guidelines that limit hip motion for the first two months following surgery. Most importantly, they are instructed to limit hip flexion to no more than 90 degrees. These limitations complicate and inhibit a patient's simple daily activities such as sitting in a chair or on the toilet seat or getting in a car.

Following Total Hip Replacement Surgery using the Anterior approach, however, patients are immediately allowed to bend their hip freely and avoid these cumbersome restrictions. Also there is no need for physical reeducation. Patients are instructed to use their hip freely. Also, if patients are sexually active before surgery, there are no limitations on resuming normal sexual activity after surgery.
